To start the year, first-person shooter Highguard started to trend partly due to its big reveal at The Game Awards. The game was released on January 26, following a showcase from Wildlight Entertainment. Just over a week after its launch, the game heavily dropped in its player count from over 100K concurrent players to 1K players.
A new report from Stephen Totilo from Game File claims that Chinese gaming giant Tencent was the secret lead financial backer of Wildlight Entertainment. Neither company disclosed this relationship publicly.
A few hours before this report came out, it was discovered that the official Highguard website stated “it is currently unavailable,” adding to the speculation that the game might indeed be dead at this point.

Last week, employees at Wildlight Entertainment revealed that most of the studio’s employees were laid off. The studio did make a statement afterwards, mentioning they will be keeping a core group of developers to continue innovating on and supporting the game.
