
For a majority of Supermassive Games’ repertoire, the developer has been a good asset for PlayStation when it comes to content and even first-party releases. However, after the initial Until Dawn release for PlayStation 4 and following spin-off releases on PlayStation VR, the firm transitioned onward to multiplatform work with Bandai Namco. This introducing The Dark Pictures Anthology in 2019.
This past October finally concluded the first season of this new franchise with ‘The Devil in Me’. But that is not all. In a prior discovery via multiple trademark filings, there is more still on the road ahead. In total, there are five additional titles expected to be cooked up by the game studio: The Craven Man, 0 Death, Directive 8020, Intercession, and Winterfold. But, the firm has gone full circle with a unique release for PlayStation VR 2 this coming February.
From a recent lineup for the second headset launch, The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR was scheduled to release in the launch window for the PlayStation VR 2. But in a new announcement via Twitter, the game is now pushed a few weeks ahead into March 2023.
“The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR is supermassive games’ most ambitious virtual reality project to date, taking players through five extensive worlds that branch through various terror filled rollercoaster routes based on the dark pictures franchise,” the letterhead in the tweet reads. ‘With this in mind, we have made the difficult decision to set a new launch date.”
“It has always been our aim to release in the launch window of the new PlayStation VR2 headset but it is also massively important to us that you, the players, receive the most polished, terrifying experience possible when you strap in for your first ride in The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR. […] Thank you for all your excitement and patience it really means the world to us!
“We cannot wait to reveal more about our sinister rollercoaster from hell and watch this space for our new gameplay features video coming very soon!” Currently, Supermassive Games is in a unique spot as a developer as the team will still conjure up more installments for this IP whilst now being a subsidiary for Nordisk Games as of this past year.
