Of course, Sonic the Hedgehog three decades later still riles up fans of Sega’s Blue Blur mascot whenever an announcement is imminent. In that, there was an extreme likelihood that the publisher would be attending The Game Awards this week. Through an exchange for an “extra invite” to the show, Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account told to be attending the event on Thursday.

Well, it was not long until official accounts went on to directly confirm it will be attending The Game Awards. Even more, the first official poster for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was also issued with a glimpse at the titular character, Tails in his Tornado biplane, and the new look for Jim Carry’s Dr. Robotnik.

From the Thursday show, Paramount officially launched the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 which you can view in the video below:

“After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands,” the synapse from the movie’s website reads.

While fans are traditionally accustomed to Knuckles working alongside Sonic & Tails, the story that the Echidna is fighting the duo is canonically accurate. Rewinding back to Sonic Adventure, it was evident that Knuckles only protected the Emerald which was a guarded gem for his region and later befriended Sonic after learning the malicious uses planned by Dr. Robotnik.
