The Super Mario Galaxy Movie officially hits theaters on Wednesday, April 1st, and the critics are in full force with their reviews of the sequel. The movie has seen quite a bit of anticipation from fans with the arrival of Rosalina, Bowser Jr., and Yoshi appearing in the Mario movie universe for the first time. Last week, we learned that Fox McCloud will also be featured.
As it stands on Wednesday, March 31, 2026, the Rotten Tomatoes score of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is sitting at a 42% with over 73 reviews from critics. This number will continue to change as time goes on.
One reviewer from But Why Tho? mentions the movie “is a bit of a mess, prioritizing lavish visuals, set pieces, and a critical mass of references over telling a coherent story”.
Another reviewer from Independent also mentions the lack of a plot here and that there isn’t a single memorable character.
However, a review from Collider admits the story might be thin and new characters may not get the attention they deserve, but it remains a charming and hilarious movie.
The overall negative feedback seems to be directed towards the lack of story and certain characters not being shown. If we remember anything from the first Mario film in 2023, the movie also lacked a bit of storytelling, so this isn’t surprising to hear.
