One of the biggest talking points about the launch of the 9th generation consoles is the immense amount of achievements that kicked off these new systems – namely the PlayStation 5. Over the course of the first three months upon release, the PlayStation 5 was regarded the biggest release for a console in the United States. Additionally, the same system was also throned first in fastest-selling unit in dollar amount for the U.S. too.
Even more, it was also recorded that the PlayStation 5 also comes to be the fastest-selling system overall, shattering industry milestones for any other console before it. But, despite the volume that the machine was moving, it still fell short in other respects. That alongside the Xbox Series X|S both faced being short in comparison to preceding hardware. Much of that at the time was due to the limited components thanks to the global pandemic at the time.
However, in a new report from VGChartz, the PlayStation 5 still remains short in comparison to the PlayStation 4 – a system about to turn 10 next month. When measuring the PlayStation 5’s 34-week sale cycle compared to the PlayStation 4 at the same time in its lifespan, it reveals the newer system only sold 42.23 million whilst the former achieved 42.74 million.
“The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup,” VGChartz writes. “August 2023 is the 34th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 0.64 million units.
“In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 1.99 million units. The PS4 is currently ahead of the PS5 by 0.51 million units. The PS5 has sold 42.23 million units in 34 months, while the PS4 sold 42.74 million units. Month 34 for the PS5 is August 2023 and for the PS4 is August 2016.” So although the new system still outpaces its predecessor by volume in comparison, it still falls short despite a larger pull currently.
