From 2024, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth came as one of the definitive releases to hit systems that year. The game even made its way to be nominated for The Game Awards’ Game of the Year as well. But, Square Enix has been vocal on the underwhelming return on the remake sequel. Alongside Final Fantasy XVI, this has resulted in Square Enix reconsidering its exclusive deal with PlayStation.

Already, both Final Fantasy XVI & more recently Final Fantasy VII Rebirth received PC releases. Additionally, Square Enix has remained vocal on pursuing multiplatform efforts for its projects which could include other prior releases also. Even in its ongoing initiative to include Xbox players, Square Enix pledged to “deepen” its commitment to the platform too.

In a recent interview with IGN Brazil, franchise producer Yoshinori Kitase explained that the sales were satisfying enough for Square Enix. Although numbers were never disclosed or how Final Fantasy VII Rebirth performed, Kitase does go on to elaborate on the end of platform exclusives from Square Enix.

In terms of sales expectations, Sony held the PlayStation Partners Awards in Japan, and there was a category (Grand Award) in which they awarded the three best-selling games, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was one of them alongside Black Myth: Wukong and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. So, I think being recognized in this aspect gives me the certainty that we have reached a certain level.

“While we are confident and pleased that we are reaching a certain level of sales, it is clear that with the modernity of gaming, we cannot be exclusive to a single platform. I think we need to offer the game to as many players as possible,” Kitase added; translated through an auto-translator. Howbeit, there has yet to be a strong understanding if Rebirth or even XVI is coming to Xbox.

Previously, Square Enix did open itself to select titles coming to the Microsoft platform with games such as Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, Trials of Mana, and Legend of Mana all arriving to Xbox back in September 2024. You can read the full report by heading here.

Do you think more Final Fantasy titles will arrive for Xbox?
