Microsoft have finally unveiled the new Windows Phone 10 operating system, and have announced that it will be available for all Windows Phone 8 devices, previously released before today. The update will be free for all users, and even though there is currently no release date, a preview has been promised for Insiders around the time of the Superbowl. This version of the build will be available for phones and devices with a display smaller than 8 inches.
The Windows Phone 10 interface has been changed in many areas. These include:
- A changed UI for the Start Screen, closer to the desktop version of Windows 8/10
- A modified order of the app list, which shows recently installed apps at the top of the list, for ease of access.
- A new updated Cortana interface, with dictation and more speech/text options.
- A keyboard which is now movable across the display, which makes it more accessible for larger displays
- A Notification Center, which can now sync between devices, and shows more information. The widgets at the top of the Notification Center can now be dragged downwards, expanding the options available.
- Toast Notifications can now be directly interacted with, and data can be entered without entering the app. [For example, texts can be replied to, from the notification]
- IM services can now be embedded into the Messaging App [Skype was shown at the event]
- A redesigned settings menu, and general UI tweaks.
- A new updated Office, and Outlook for Windows Phone devices, to further bridge the gap between PC and mobile devices
- New Photos, People and Maps apps, to fit in with the Windows 10 Interface. Also hints towards the new “Spartan” browser.
