While many users continue to consume big budget, AAA projects as we stretch closer into the next-generation especially, these titles will only continue to grow in size demanding users to free up tens if not hundreds of GBs to install. It is already an apparent issue – looking at you Modern Warfare – across all platforms, and developers only increase the space requirement as these titles become more demanding.
Howbeit, the question in mind when asking Xbox head Phil Spencer is told to be something the internal teams are currently investigating. The magnitude of titles from Xbox Game Studios alike elsewhere are reaching great sizes as games like Gears 5 tips into 60 GB and Halo: The Master Chief Collection exceeding 100 GB respectively, those numbers are slowly becoming the norm.
But Microsoft has already pursued minimizing the size of its published titles. Back in January 2019, Rare announced to be reducing the file size of Sea of Thieves by 20 GB all around; virtually 50 percent of the initial client install. Now Spencer shares to further that progress with other pre-existing and upcoming titles when speaking to Kotaku.
The work you talked about that Rare did is one of those things that we will continue to push for our own teams and with partners to make sure we’re respecting the users SSD space or disc space.
Reiterating on the elephant in the room, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, games like this for example would be a drastic life changer for Xbox users all around. While the game is on PC also, users can decide to install each game individually and manage the size of the anthology altogether. But for those playing on TV, the same cannot be said.
Looking ahead, ambitious release like Obsidian Entertainment’s Avowed, Playground Games’ Fable, and Turn 10’s Forza Motorsport can all benefit from the progress if achieved by Microsoft. Elsewhere in the interview, Spencer also disclosed the firm’s viewpoint on last month’s acquisition on Bethesda. You can read the full report by heading here.
