Update – 1/7/2020 3:41 PM EST

In a report that emerged today over on Thurrott, Brad Sams returns with new information after discussing with several personnel who have worked with the coming Xbox Series X. After the slew of misinterpreted detail regarding the backside of the upcoming console, Sams is confident to suggest that the backing is actually comprised of a single HMDI port, 2 USB-A ports (one one the front), Ethernet, an S/PDIF port.

Although he has talked with a handful of sources that are part of the unit’s development, he does clarify that some aspects might change as development is still currently active for the new hardware. Hopefully regarding the USB ports by changing to the C-type as the modern receptor as of recently has been presenting to be a universal alternative to the older iterations.

Update – 1/6/2020 8:04 PM EST

It was brought to attention from Thurrott Executive Editor Brad Sams that the initial image of the backside for the Xbox One X model is not accurate, derived from the statement put out by Microsoft. AMD for the presentation at CES used a render of the console which does not represent the final product.

While Microsoft does denounce the initial reporting to be inaccurate of the render presented, they however do not disclose what specifically is not legitimate to the retail model which gives room for the possibility that some aspects of the fabricated backing to be on the real model. Only leaving that as speculation until properly clarified by Microsoft.

As we are more than familiar with by now, the next generation of console hardware is truly upon us later in 2020 as Microsoft is preparing to release at least one iteration of Xbox alongside the competing PlayStation 5 from Sony. While we do know these new units are upon us, regarding more details of the coming consoles themselves we are less familiar with. Either that being the capabilities witnessed in the flesh or physical traits for the approaching consoles, we are currently left in the dark.

Both Microsoft and Sony emphasize faster and more responsive units with features like 8K more or less 4K support, 120 frames per second, ray tracing, and backward compatibility to be what sells this over the current Xbox One and PlayStation 4. However, that is not up for discussion for now, what is instead focuses on the available backing for the Xbox Series X.

Revealed today at the annual CES event in Las Vegas, AMD showcased a presentation and at one point revealed a 360° view of the beefier Xbox model scheduled to release this coming holiday. Upon viewing the backing of the console it reveals that the Xbox Series X will be comprised of two USB-C ports, two HDMI ports, Ethernet port, and an S/PDIF port.

Here is an image of the back which you can view below:

From the overview glimpse of the line of ports on the back of the new console, things like two HDMI slots does raise an eyebrow for what will be different from the Xbox One. Support for features like dual screen monitors is one or the ability to include HDMI passthrough, neither have yet been confirmed from Microsoft as of reporting. The other for Ethernet does excite fans who plan to utilize high-speed internet for the most efficient playtime when in multiplayer lobbies.

What does also leave more unanswered questions is if this will only apply to the Series X seeing that this model is specified for intense playing as the unit is advertised to be the stronger of the latter. Aware that the codenamed ‘Lockhart’ model is still planned to arrive at some point, does that mean the weaker console will lack some of these characteristics? That will only be answered as time continues to unravel.

Speaking of this week’s CES event, it was disclosed by The Verge Senior Editor Tom Warren who this past Thursday that Sony will be present at the show. Speculation hints for a potential reveal of the upcoming PlayStation 5. You can read the full report by heading here.
