In the middle of next month, October 19, Fallout: New Vegas will be turning ten years old. And despite the cult following that has and continues to follow the 2010 entry, only two installments in the series arose: Fallout 4 & Fallout 76. But despite these games introducing a new engine with unique settings and later even multiplayer, fans that founded their love for the universe are still awaiting for a potential return of the subgenre.
What makes Fallout: New Vegas so unique in a developers stand point is that it is a side entry produced by a separate team, Obsidian Entertainment. Given that Bethesda published the title, the Irvine-based team is solely responsible for the creative drive of the project and utilizes the universe derived from Bethesda’s Fallout 3. Reiterating on the roots of the franchise and telling a unique tale in the titular Mojave setting.
But despite the fan outcry for Bethesda and Obsidian Entertainment to collaborate once again to make a sequel, the idea was shot down. In fall 2018, Obsidian Entertainment on Twitter denounced the chances for a new entry as “very doubtful” as illustrated through a magic 8-Ball response.
This week, however, many thought those chances could change after Microsoft – the firm that owns Obsidian Entertainment – purchased Bethesda. In an acquisition for parent company Zenimax Media, Microsoft also nabs the property rights to Fallout. Howbeit, when asked following the news, it is still unsure if the follow-up would still come to fruition.
Yes, perhaps fantasizing on a second installment for Fallout: New Vegas might be premature anticipation following the acquisition, but it is certainly possible. Now that both Bethesda & Obsidian Entertainment are under one roof with a virtually endless budget, the game could be birthed for sure. But as of now, the call for a sequel might be a little too soon.
Surely time will tell and hopefully some of those representing Fallout will spare more in the coming future, but as of yet, there is no definite sign of a Fallout: New Vegas follow-up. With it being just over a day since the news was broke, who know what might tail behind the next chapter for Bethesda at Xbox Game Studios.
Yesterday, it was reported by Bloomberg when speaking to Xbox head Phil Spencer that the current deals between Bethesda & Sony Interactive Entertainment will be honored despite the recent acquisition. The agreements include exclusive dealings to ship Deathloop & GhostWire: Tokyo uniquely on PlayStation 5. You can read the full report by heading here.
Would you play a follow-up to Fallout: New Vegas if it happens?
