All Runner Shells Ranked
Runner Shells’ ranking changes depend on solo vs squad gameplay in Marathon. We ranked each shell based on its abilities and playstyle, along with its synergy with others.
1. Assassin

Assassin is the best Runner Shell in our ranked list due to her ability to ambush, infiltrate, and escape fights without getting noticed. What makes her the best character is her kit, which revolves around smoke screens and invisibility to avoid detection.
Her Smoke Screen allows her to throw a disc that creates smoke clouds, while the Active Camo makes you temporarily invisible. Assassin’s abilities allow her to control when to fight and when to disappear.
Recon scanners can counter her invisibility, making her vulnerable in tough encounters. She can slam into the ground and deploy smoke while airborne. Assassin is strong for solo extraction runs and flanking enemy teams.
| Pros | Cons |
| Stealth and invisibility | Vulnerable in team fights. |
| Great escape tools | Requires good positioning and timing |
| High Mobility |
2. Recon

The Recon is the second Runner Shell in Marathon, as it allows players to track, scan, and reveal enemies during the match. This shell focuses more on giving teammates information about enemies than on mobility or damage. Recon contributes a lot to the team, allowing them to decide fights before they even start. Her Echo Pulse ability sends out sonar pulses that scan the area and reveal nearby enemies.
The one thing that every player must focus on using is their Tracker Drone, which deploys a small spider-like drone that explodes on contact. Recon comes with moderate agility, solid defense firewall, and average loot speed.
She’s also the best counter to stealth shells like Assassin, and lets teams choose when to attack or retreat. This Runner shell is more used for hunting enemy teams and countering stealth approaches.
| Pros | Cons |
| Excellent enemy detection | Requires teamwork |
| Solid Team Support | Average Mobility |
| Help Control Fights | Lower direct combat Power |
3. Destroyer

Destroyer is third in line on our ranked list due to its ability to focus on direct combat, durability, and area control. This Runner Shell comes with tools like energy shields, homing missiles, and mobility thrusters to charge into fights quickly. Playing it correctly lets you dominate enemies and help complete the objective.
Search and Destroy ability allows you to deal sustained damage to enemies with the help of missile pods. It also has the energy shield that blocks incoming damage, increasing the survivability in tough encounters.
Destroyer has combat stats such as Hardware: 25, Firewall: 20, Heat Capacity: 15, and Melee Damage: 15. These stats help this shell achieve high durability and strong close-range combat potential. Destroyer is still very strong for players who prefer aggressive combat and a tanky playstyle.
| Pros | Cons |
| High durability | Lower mobility |
| Defensive Shield | Not stealthy |
| Strong area control |
4. Triage

Triage in Marathon is a combat medic and team sustain shell that excels at healing, supporting teammates, and even reviving them. It provides the team with absolute help, allowing them to stand on their feet and fight enemies again. Reboot+ ability allows the shell to fire charged tendrils to revive a downed teammate from a distance or EMP an enemy.
Triage can also deploy the floating drone that attaches to you or a teammate, restoring health over time. Having this type of Runner Shell is compulsory if you want the best team for the match. Enemies can deal damage or even kill you, but Triage can save your life multiple times.
Although it’s not a damage dealer shell, it can contribute a lot during a run, especially during extraction. Being able to bring allies back from a distance makes it the best Runner Shells of Rook and Thief. Triage loses most of its benefits in solo play.
| Pros | Cons |
| Remote Revives | Weak Solo Play |
| Team Sustain | Low Mobility |
5. Vandal

Vandal in Marathon is a mobility‑focused shell that uses rapid movement and explosive knockback to dominate enemies. Using this Runner Shell properly lets you outmaneuver and disorient enemies during the tough encounters.
It has greater speed, better positioning, and more chaos than the stealth approaches. Amplify increases movement speed and weapon handling, while Disrupt Cannon allows the Vandal to fire an explosive projectile to deal massive damage.
It can also perform a supercharged slide to move faster and make a second jump while airborne. This shell can easily close the gap between the enemies, dodge fire, and reposition quickly. However, you must manage heat carefully, or you can get vulnerable in crucial moments. Vandal is the best Runner Shell for the players who prefer a hit-and-run playstyle and want to overwhelm enemies.
| Pros | Cons |
| High Mobility | Lower Utility |
| Strong Positioning | Difficult to Master |
| Disruptive Combat Style | Require Heat Management |
6. Rook

Rook is a solo-type character in Marathon who can restore your health over time and let you blend in with UESC AI enemies. This shell is effective at directly engaging enemies in combat. It can enter matches already in progress and cannot use your own gear or vault items. Rook lacks offensive capabilities but focuses more on survival and stealth.
Losing a Rook run doesn’t cost your weapons, as you bring no gear at the start. This is the best shell for the players who prefer practicing map knowledge and learning map locations. It’s not a top choice for most players because it lacks strong abilities, defense, and offensive power. Rook can be very useful if you want zero risk when looting and gathering gear.
| Pros | Cons |
| Low Risk | Weak in Direct Combat |
| Scavenger Playstyle | Useless Loadout |
| Stealth Approach | Solo Play |
7. Thief

The Thief in Marathon has a playstyle centered around looting, movement, and utility. This Runner Shell lacks heavy combat tools, making it the worst on the ranked list. It comes with the ability to deploy a remote‑controlled drone to knock loot out of enemies’ backpacks.
Thief can also fire a grappling hook that pulls you toward a location, helping you reposition or escape dangerous fights. It can also reveal loot containers through walls and highlight their rarity, helping with scouting loot and locating enemies.
| Pros | Cons |
| Excellent Mobility | Less Effective in Combat |
| Intel Gathering | Limited Utility |
| Unique Playstyle |
