After the Japanese newspaper Nikkei reported yesterday that Nintendo had plans to cease production of the Wii-U console at the end of 2016, the news spread across the gaming news world incredibly quickly. However, the Japanese site IT Media reported a statement from Nintendo. “The [Nikkei] report did not come from within our company.” Nintendo reportedly further clarified, “The company plans to continue production through [and beyond] the next fiscal year.”
While cutting production of the Wii-U console at the end of this year would be a surprising move for Nintendo, even considering the sub-par sales that the console has generated, the upcoming Nintendo NX system could easily render the console obsolete if it includes backward compatibility. E3 will undoubtedly bring more news on the company’s plan for the future.
