Insomniac Games Developer Shares Sunset Overdrive Was The Blueprint For Later Releases Like Marvel’s Spider-Man/Ratchet & Clank

Rewinding back to the start of the 8th console generation, Microsoft already tripped itself heavily with the launch of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 took the opportunity to run ahead of its competitor. Despite the position the Xbox company was in, 2014 ended with one of the most memorable releases for the platform – Sunset Overdrive. The game is most notable for its post-apocalyptic setting of titular Sunset City as mutants take over the metropolitan region.

However, there has only been one game since the game’s original launch. Noted, there was plenty of evidence suggesting a PC release until the version actually shipped later on. But, the most questioning is that Sony Interactive Entertainment now has full ownership of the IP with the acquisition of Insomniac Games later on.

But what many do not consider is the catalyst Sunset Overdrive was for later Insomniac Games-made releases. Senior Cinematic Animator Lindsay Thompson explained that the game stood as a “proving ground” for its latest releases unique to PlayStation.

“It was super fun to make too!” she ended the tweet by sharing. While the series is currently a one-and-done release, there is hope to eventually see the series arise into something more. One nod to that possibility is that Sony previously trademarked the series in the United States. Perhaps there is work to be done for the franchise, but there is no concrete understanding if that is a current vision at Insomniac Games.

More notably is the remark made by Marcus Smith that directed the the original game shared excitement to return for more Sunset Overdrive. “I mean, never say never is my approach. Obviously, we’re part of Sony now, but we own the IP and so there’s nothing really stopping us other than we have a lot of really exciting things in our future,” he said in an interview to GQ.
