In the roadmap for Sony Interactive Entertainment moving forward, we know with absolute certainty that Bungie is involved. Earlier this week it was revealed that the original Halo developer would be acquired by the PlayStation firm for more than $3 billion. Additionally, corporate Sony told the deal spent roughly $1.2 to ensure staff will remain at the game studio moving forward with the purchase.
Elsewhere, Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO Jim Ryan pressed on the matters of its intent with the Destiny 2 team. For one, the game studio is to continue its work on the ongoing experience. Atop of that, Bungie will assist in the platform’s urgency to deliver a multiplatform, live service project on behalf of PlayStation. But, there is more Sony has planned for the deal with Bungie.
When speaking to gamesindustry.biz this week, Ryan did elaborate lightly on expanding Bungie’s IP to other mediums like film and television. Now, Sony during its latest earnings call went on to solidify this intent for Destiny and other properties in tow – as transcribed by IGN.
[It’s] not just for [the] gaming area, but the multi-using of IP and merchandising of IP – like a game title maybe put into movies. Bungie want to nurture the IP they have in a multi-dimensional manner, and that’s their hope. For that, we believe we can help that – we have [Sony] Pictures and [Sony] Music, and Bungie can leverage our platform so that their IP can flourish and grow big.Horoki Totoki, Sony CFO
Last year, Bungie pressed on this pursuit in a press release preparing the industry another IP is on the horizon. “To expand the Destiny IP and bring new stories and experiences to their highly engaged community, Bungie appointed Mark Noseworthy (Vice President, Destiny Universe) and Luke Smith (Executive Creative Director, Destiny Universe) to oversee and prepare for the expansion of the Destiny Universe into additional media,” the firm shared then.
Alongside Bungie’s involvement for broader experiences from Sony Interactive Entertainment, the firm has also disclosed its intents for the pursuit. In the same earnings call, Sony plans to deliver 10 live service titles by 2026. You can read the full report by heading here.
