Just a few years ago, PlatinumGames as part of its self-named ‘Platinum4’ initiative revealed a campaign to center its focus on self-published work – leaning away from dependency on publishers and to truly work on new releases. This also came around the same time the Japanese firm welcomed a capital investment from Tencent back in early 2020.

However, the firm is taking an interesting turn with founder and studio director Hideki Kamiya announcing his departure from the team. Kamiya has emphasized on his desires to make follow-ups to the lineage he created previously. Additionally, he even called to Microsoft to get in contact in restarting Scalebound – a project in which has been reported to be underway, insiders claim.

In a new video uploaded on YouTube, Kamiya shares that he will be pursuing his time outside of PlatinumGames on the new channel. He clarifies that he isn’t to return to game development for at least a year – and not really indicating why either. You can watch the trailer in the video below:

“You can BLEEP OUT, right? How should I put it… hmm… How can I put it… Umm… THERE’S NO WAY I CAN PUT IT. You guys understand, right? But… I’d say, I left the company because I wanted to follow my beliefs as a game creator. And to choose the path I think is right and move on. Yeah, so I’m not going to retire yet. I want to keep creating games,” he expresses in the video.

“Am I even allowed to say this out loud?” Gematsu shares in a translation for the Hideki Kamiya video. “I can’t work for (the same industry for) a year. Due to reasons. So, it’ll be a while until I bring good news to you all. It’ll take time. but I’ll make it happen.” Kamiya does not spare information on if he is to return to PlatinumGames, join a new team, or kickstart his own venture.

What is your thoughts on Hideki Kamiya’s new pursuit on YouTube?
