When it came to the launch of the new Xbox & PlayStation, both systems started off strong despite the global situation at hand. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, production was still at a standstill for manufacturers. Shortly after November 2020, it was reported that both systems were tracking on par with preceding Xbox One & PlayStation 4. Despite that, it did not take long for the PlayStation 5 to take off; already doubling sales of Xbox Series X|S at the time.
And this continued for some time as PlayStation 5 units continued to reach new heights. This month, it was officially confirmed that PlayStation 5 has reached new heights with over 50 million units sold. While 2023 continued this momentum for both platforms, it was no secret what the better-selling system was. And now, it is report to be three-fold for PlayStation 5.
In a report from The Financial Times, it is told that the PlayStation 5 has now sold opposing the Xbox Series X|S 3:1. Ampere Analysis analyst Piers Harding-Rolls shared: “There was a lot of pent-up demand [for PS5], so when the supply came in, [Sony] broke all records in the first quarter of this year.” Of course, we can see this momentum carry forward. Sales swelled 65 percent whilst Xbox Series X|S dropped 15 percent.
What is also pointed out despite overtaking the competing Microsoft console by three laps now is that the PlayStation 5 still tracks behind the PlayStation 4 – only by one week. In the same time that the previous PlayStation 4 reached 50 million units, it was 161 weeks. This corroborates with a previous report that despite breaking new ground, the PlayStation 5 still stands in the shadow of the previous iteration.
Elsewhere in the same report from The Financial Times, it is revealed that the PlayStation VR 2 is not performing as Sony Interactive Entertainment was hoping. When pressed on how executive view the headset performing, head of global business Eric Lempel told it to be “challenging” for PlayStation. You can read the full report by heading here.
