When it came to Half-Life, it appeared that Valve was satisfied with the two flagship releases and post-launch story episodes that shipped for the sequels. But in a surprising move, it continued the universe with Half-Life: Alyx in 2020. A prequel that stood between both original games, it filled the void for a third game. Valve did go on to admit it wanted to create more titles for the IP seeing how the VR title received then.
In a follow-up report, Valve did answer for why there was no episode 3 for Half-Life 2. Speaking to IGN, level designer Dario Casali explained that the efforts for episode 3 never satisfied the team and ultimately left the story to hang indefinitely. However, the team did address the series last year. In November, Valve shipped an update to the original Half-Life which included new content as well as Steam Deck support for the first release.
And while there is no sign that the developer is actively working on anything Half-Life, the first sign of life has appeared. From fans searching online, they uncovered a job listing which indicates a new Half-Life project is underway. Codenamed ‘Project White Sands’, the finding originated on voice acting website.
“Project White Sands (video game)|TBA|Valve,” the listing read before being shuttered once word broke out. Of course, the biggest telltale sign from the codename for this new game is ‘White Sands’. This is significant as it is the setting in which the Black Mesa facility is located. What is left unanswered is how Valve intends to approach the game.
The website did not list what actor will be involved in the new project. What’s more, it is left undetermined if it will be a follow-up to Gordon Freeman or another storypath that explores the greater universe for Half-Life.
What do you think Valve has planned for Half-Life with Project White Sands?
