One of the most upsetting announcements came from Sony Interactive Entertainment earlier in June: it will end production on physical releases for its platform at the start of 2028. The announcement sent a shockwave across the industry as many viewed the platform as the ultimate platform for proper ownership. There was another announcement: PlayStation 3 & PlayStation Vita would also be closing its storefronts officially.
Back in 2021, it was attempted by Sony to end the servers then. However, only the PlayStation Portable was struck down as backlash for PS3 & PS Vita announcement started a fire within the community; the firm soon felt the heat. Amid the victory for the 6th generation system, its opponent ended up falling short. The XBOX 360 in 2024 officially closed its servers that summer.
In the PlayStation Blog post, Sony Interactive Entertainment says the official swing of the hammer to end PlayStation 3 & PlayStation Vita servers will land in 2027. For select markets like Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua – those countries will see the effect this August. Additional Latin American & Middle Eastern territories will face the same impact later this fall.
“After nearly two decades of supporting the PS3 console generation, we wanted to let you know we will be closing the PlayStation Store on PS3, as well as on PS Vita. PlayStation Store on PS3 will close in select markets starting this year, followed by global closures for PS3 and PS Vita next year. […] As the PlayStation Store continues to evolve to support modern commerce systems, including updated payment processing standards, PS3 and PS Vita are no longer able to support these updates at the level required.”
Sony Interactive Entertainment communications senior director Sid Shuman also injects in the announcement: “We know this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming. PS3 and PS Vita represent an important era in our PlayStation history, so this was not an easy decision for us to make. As we continue to expand the PlayStation experience on newer devices that most of our users are playing on today, we need to focus more resources on delivering the best gaming experiences on these platforms as we look ahead towards the future.”
Back in 2021, while fans had its initial victory to preserve the PlayStation 3 & PlayStation Vita servers, Sony Interactive Entertainment did sever other features. In October then, it was revealed that Paypal alongside credit card payment options would be removed. You can read the full report by heading here.
