While an anticipated addition for PlayStation 5, the PlayStation VR 2 peripheral has remained a slowly forgotten aspect for this generation. While competition continue to ramp up over at Meta, it is hard to argue against the price : value ratio for PlayStation VR 2. Previously, it was reported that Meta Quest 2 & Meta Quest 3 both outperformed PlayStation VR 2 in holiday 2023. And Sony is not gullible to this information even admitting the tough market virtual reality is as well.

One response that Sony Interactive Entertainment has done to ease the blow is PC support. Launched in August last month, Steam has now enabled compatibility for PlayStation VR 2. However, there is a separate accessory required to use the device. What’s more, reports recently also suggest back pedaling by PlayStation. From Android Central, current plans for first-party teams includes only two projects on PlayStation VR 2.

One of the biggest red flags was the lack of backwards compatibility. And although some games did issue free upgrades, a large sum of those are still on the original PlayStation VR. One of those titles is Minecraft. In a new update this week, Mojang Studios revealed that its continued support for PlayStation VR is to officially end in March 2025.

“Our ability to support PlayStation VR has come to an end, and will no longer be supported in updates after March of 2025. After you receive the final update, you will still receive updates on your PlayStation and be able to play without PlayStation VR,” Mojang Studios reveals in the latest update notes. Saddening is that there is no mention of PlayStation VR 2 support in the statement.

“From this point on you can keep building in your worlds, and your Marketplace purchases (including Tokens) will continue to be available. You will no longer be able to use your PlayStation VR with Minecraft as it will no longer be supported in the latest updates.” So for at least another half year, Minecraft will be on a time limit until it is unavailable on PlayStation VR 2.

Previously, Mojang Studios did press that a native PlayStation 5 version of Minecraft is in the works. But lacking the confirmation if that extends to PlayStation VR 2, it is questionable how likely support will be enabled for Minecraft whenever the update goes live.
