Although plenty of criticisms currently for PlayStation is towards the reveal of the PlayStation 5 Pro reveal, many have still yet to forget the prior slip up from Sony either. In September, Firewalk Studios’ Concord closed its servers just two weeks following its release. After the fall of the ax, reports surfaced indicating that the game cost $400 million for PlayStation with little to show in return.
Propped up to being the platform’s next major IP, it was certainly not anticipated by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Enough so that an entire episode dedicated to the IP was greenlit for Amazon’s Secret Level which airs this December. However, despite the fallout of the game less than a month after release, it was confirmed that Amazon & PlayStation still plans to release the episode as intended.
And as uncertainty continues to linger for the future of Concord and its developer, an update has opened up recently. According to Kotaku, sources within Firewalk Studios indicate that game director Ryan Ellis has stepped down from his position. While although not signifying what he has moved on to, it is suggested to be for a supporting role elsewhere.
Other learnings from this new development also tell that staffing at Firewalk Studios are uncertain on the plans for the studio. Some are certain that the team will transition to work on other projects under the PlayStation Studios banner. On the other hand, there are employees that expect layoffs to take place as a result for Concord’s performance.
Since the announcement of Concord’s fate, there has been speculation for a revisioning for the hero shooter. Speculation indicating a free-to-play return for the game or added as a PlayStation Plus release. Ellis during the initial announcement did suggest that PlayStation is discussing reshaping the game into something more beneficial for the platform potentially.
