Last fall, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 shipped delivering one of the most memorable experiences for 2023. “If you are new to PlayStation, a disabled player looking for a blockbuster they can fully experience, or a returning fan, playing Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is an absolute no-brainer and its easily one of my favorite open world games I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing for myself.” Rectify Gaming offers a score of 9.5/10.
What was more surprising is the aftermath of the game’s release. By November that fall, it was revealed that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 sold 5 million units in just under two weeks, However, the game did not suffice for The Game Awards. Despite being nominated for over seven different awards – including Game of the Year – it left empty handed at the end of the ceremony.
According to a new development revealed by Sony in its 2024 corporate report, it reveals that some of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was pieced together thanks to AI-generative voice recognition to sync subtitles for the game.
“We used machine learning in the production of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, a game released last year that proved a major hit. By applying voice-recognition software in certain languages, we were able to automatically synchronize subtitles with each character’s lines, thereby significantly shortening the subtitling process.”
The surprise comes amid the growing connotation towards machine learning with work filled by employees are slowly being reduced to AI algorithms. Similarly, Microsoft is also exploring the same possibilities on the other side as well. In a partnership with inworld, this new effort is to explore new tools for developers when creating games.
Next on the menu for Insomniac Games is Marvel’s Wolverine. While an update on the game has been vacant since its announcement, the wait is still a while away. According to one leaker, the game is planned to ship sometime in Fy2026. You can read the full report by heading here.
