The ongoing battle for the Nintendo Switch to reign dominance in the console race continues more than seven years since the launch of the system in 2017. With more than 146 million units accounted for, there are still some hurdles to overcome. At 154 million is Nintendo’s own DS handheld. But, if the Nintendo Switch could overtake the Nintendo Wii, it is certainly possible.
Another adversary is the PlayStation 2. While sitting in first place, it wasn’t until recently that Sony Interactive Entertainment updates sales numbers for the PlayStation 2. In November, it was revealed that the PlayStation 2 has 160 million global sales for the console. In the United States, however, Nintendo did overtake the PlayStation 2 officially.
According to NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella via BlueSky, the Nintendo Switch is now ranked #2 in the US market, still tailing behind the Nintendo DS. Nintendo Switch has now sold a total of 46.6 million units in its seven year lifespan thus far which now exceeds the legacy of the PlayStation 2.
As for other triumphs that Nintendo Switch has achieved in this market, the hybrid handheld console did outpace its older sibling the Nintendo Wii back in August 2023 in the United States. It took more than a year for this milestone despite the lifetime sales being achieved in February the year prior. However, the window to now exceed the remaining opponents is shrinking.
In recent weeks, newer stories are surfacing online revealing new information on the Nintendo Switch successor. Accessory manufacturer Dbrand shared the peripheral in renders for cases of the new system. And a in separate instance, one leaker revealed the proper title for this new system will be the ‘Nintendo Switch 2’. You can read the full report by heading here.
Are you surprised the Nintendo Switch outsold the PlayStation 2 in the United States finally?
