Report: Next PlayStation 5 Revision Will Reduce The Console’s Internal Storage

Come this November will mark the 5th anniversary for the release of the PlayStation 5. And in its time since launching in 2020, there have been multiple revisions of the system itself. One of the first noted is a rework to the cooling systems for the console to better relive heat in the console when running. Similarly, there was also reports that the console would ship a new version that could enable support for an external disc player as well.

In 2023, Rectify Gaming did exclusive coverage on the differences of the PlayStation 5 with its new ‘Slim’ model that offered a smaller frame and new external plates for the console. Then came the PlayStation 5 Pro that introduced a new threshold for the platform bridging resolution & performance. But, the price tag was revealed at a very tall $700. And despite selling over 80 million units, Sony has readjusted console pricing.

Earlier this August, the PlayStation 5 received a price increase to $550 ($500 for Digital) as well as the PlayStation 5 Pro now costing $750. Now the following month, a new revision to the PlayStation 5 is on the way and is certainly questioning the value of the console especially now. Billbil-Kun via Dealabs reveals that the PlayStation 5 slim digital edition will be receiving a reduction in its storage.

According to the report, ‘PS5 Slim Digital Chassis E’ is the next revision for PlayStation 5 and affects the overall storage of the console. While the PlayStation 5 slim that supports physical media retains its 1 TB storage capacity, the new digital class will face a reduction to 825 GB now. Currently, this has only been recorded for the European version of the system with no record for other regions as of yet.

The packaging will also highlight this new alteration alike the ‘4K’ and ‘HDR’ brandings on the box. Most concerning is how much space will actually be available on the console now. Although original iterations shipped with 825 GB, only 667 GB was available when properly formatted. And now this concern is returning as Sony plans to ship this new console in the coming future.
