Sony: Marathon Still On Track To Ship Before The Next Fiscal Year

Ever since the reveal of Bungie’s extraction shooter adaptation of its iconic Marathon IP, there has been many questionable things that has gone on in the background. After complaints online, the firm has previously pulled NDA requirements on the Marathon alpha back in April this year. And following the same footpath as other PlayStation Studios live-service games, the title would not be free-to-play nor full price, Bungie confirmed.

So when it came time to ship the game, Bungie rescinded its decision now shipping it for a later release in 2026. And leaving many to question if there is still a future for the new game, Sony reaffirmed the title is still expected to release; even though more talent was pooled into new efforts at PlayStation Studios instead.

And while it was understood that Marathon would need more time in the oven to brown perfectly, it will not be as long as many would anticipate. In fact, it will be right around spring time according to corporate Sony. As per a statement from CFO Lin Tao, before the next fiscal year Marathon is to release.

“We are fully dedicated to launching the title to schedule. We will assume that we will launch this within this (financial) year, and that is included in the forecast,” Tao said; thanks Eurogamer. It was also shared that there were internal playtests last month and additional calibrating is needed for the project to meet this deadline. “We are in the process of analysing the performance against those KPIs, and as needed, we will make corrections.”

Elsewhere from Tao in the same earnings call Q&A, it was revealed that Destiny 2 has yet to be a proved success for PlayStation Studios. In the three years since being acquired, results have been below expectations for the firm. You can read the full report by heading here.
