Bungie Studios has officially announced that it has delayed Marathon from its original September 23, 2025, release. A new release window has not been revealed yet, but the studio did say they have taken the passionate feedback from the Alpha playtest to heart.
“Through every comment and real-time conversation on social media and Discord, your voice has been strong and clear. We’ve taken this to heart and we know we need more time to craft Marathon into the game that truly reflects your passion,” Bungie said in their blog post today.
Bungie said it will be using this time to “empower the team” to create the intense, high-stakes experience. The studio’s goal is to really communicate with the players and make it the best title possible.
Here is a list of features Bungie plans to focus on with Marathon:
- Upping the Survival Game
- More challenging and engaging AI encounters
- More rewarding runs, with new types of loot and dynamic events
- Making combat more tense and strategic
- Doubling down on the Marathon Universe
- Increased visual fidelity
- More narrative and environmental storytelling to discover and interact with
- A darker tone that delivers on the themes of the original trilogy
- Adding more social experiences
- A better player experience for solo/duos
- Prox chat, so social stories can come to life
Marathon will be a premium game
When Marathon was revealed earlier this year, Bungie announced the first-person shooter wouldn’t be free-to-play. It will be a premium title, but it wouldn’t be a full-priced game. The rumors indicated the game would cost around $30. With the delay, it remains to be seen if that will still be part of the plans.
Marathon is planned to release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
