Since the launch of Overwatch 2 back in 2022, fans were eager to see how this installment transcends from the original with new promises on storytelling as well as fundamental gameplay loops. However, the team in the following years has only stepped back on what it campaigned for and refocused on core Overwatch elements. In 2023, the developer officially reconsidered its story mode efforts.
The project was not shaping in the way Blizzard Entertainment had hoped and an initiative to structure new co-op experiences was promised instead. The following year in 2024 Overwatch 2 also introduced ‘classic mode’ which just further reaffirms the firm’s slowly returning to form of the original. 2025 went full circle officially with 6v6 matches & loot boxes returning then too.
Now in 2026 with the IPs 10th anniversary, Blizzard Entertainment has revealed that a new story season structure is coming next week with Season 1 debuting. Alongside the promise of ten new Heroes, the proper title for Overwatch 2 is now ‘Overwatch’ as it abandons the sequel titling. You can watch the segment in the video below:
“This is the beginning of a new year, a new chapter a new era for Overwatch,” game director Aaron Keller shares. “We’ve never done anything like this before. From dropping five new heroes in one season to launching the first in our series of year-long story arcs, Overwatch is a living universe the keeps growing, keeps surprising, and keeps bringing players together from around the world.”
Keller continues,” And with that, we realized Overwatch is a game that transcends any single number. So moving forward, we’re dropping the 2 and continuing simply as Overwatch.” Keller goes on to expand on the new season structure: “For the first time ever, we’re telling an annual story with a beginning, middle, and end. A story that evolves across all six seasons of the year before a new Season 1 the next chapter in 2027.
Come the release of Season 1, five of the 10 Heroes will release for the year-long story – Domina, Emre, Mizuki, Anran, and Jetpack Cat. “Each new hero drives the story forward, reshaping the world and testing the balance of power. You’ll see this impact everywhere, map updates, artwork changes, new voice lines,” Keller said elaborating on the first handful of Heroes.
