Although coined to be more improved over its predecessor, Nintendo Switch 2 still has its drawbacks; that includes playing in Portable Mode. The system though delivering more for the system, it has caveats that the original hybrid handheld harbored. That was until this most recent update where Ver. 22.0.0 introduced a new ‘Handheld Boost Mode’ that improves the performance & visual quality.

And although the PlayStation Portal is strictly a Remote Play handheld, the game does face similar discrepancies as well in its own regard. In 2025, Sony Interactive Entertainment properly rolled out Cloud Streaming officially opening more options of play for the handheld. This comes as a major plus atop of the considered $200 for the device compared to other prominent gaming handhelds as the market’s grip on certain components is being taken by the AI race.

The same week Nintendo shipped its Nintendo Switch 2 update, Sony Interactive Entertainment also dished out its own update as well for the PlayStation Portal. A new ‘High Quality’ mode has been patched in as of March 18th. UX refinements were also included in this free update for the Remote Play handheld.

“As more players discover new ways to play on PS Portal, we remain committed to continuously refining performance and usability,” senior manager of product management Takuro Fushimi says. “Players can now select a 1080p High Quality mode during Remote Play and Cloud Streaming. This new mode enables players to enjoy games at a higher bitrate compared to the default 1080p Standard mode, providing a smooth and high-fidelity experience.”

Fushimi also lists new additions for Cloud Streaming to deliver a more fleshed out experience in the system’s UX – this includes Improved Product Detail Page; Game Invite; Enhanced Trophy notifications; Improved Search screen. There has also been a large influx of users adopting PlayStation Portal over the holiday which Fushimi emphasizes in the PlayStation Blog post.

“Since our last update in November, we’ve seen strong momentum on PS Portal. Cloud Streaming monthly users grew by 162% year-over-year in January, and over 50% of PS Portal users are now PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers – reflecting growing engagement with the cloud experience.”

Are you surprised by this level attention PlayStation Portal still receives?
