Over the last few days, there has been concern regarding PlayStation owners because it was realized that a DRM check was happening on any digital game you owned. It would have a 30-day validation countdown on any PS4 or PS5-owned games.
Twitter user Does it Play?, was the one who discovered the issue and was since investigated by the community. PlayStation support responded to users mentioning the DRM check was no mistake, and now Sony has provided a statement regarding this.
GameSpot reached out to a Sony Interactive Entertainment spokesperson and revealed the following:
“Players can continue to access and play their purchased games as usual. A one-time online check is required to confirm the game’s license, after which no further check-ins are required.”
It seems that the DRM check has to do with initially purchasing games on PlayStation and is related to its refund process, which gives you a 14-day window, providing you the option to do so. That’s at least what was theorized via a ResetEra user.
Game DRM has been a concern for gamers since the Xbox One reveal in 2013. The original plan by former head of Xbox, Don Mattrick, was to have your console do a check-in to the internet every 24 hours. The suggestion the executive had at the time, if you don’t have internet, was to stay on Xbox 360. The other concern players have is not knowing if they truly own the digital game they purchase.
Sony has at least calmed the situation by its statement today.
