Lord of Hatred expansion of Diablo IV brings a fishing feature. This mini-game added to the game world is designed as a relaxed break from combat. No fishing available if you’re playing the base Diablo IV. Different fish are tied to specific quests, but not for crafting or making any recipes. They’re mainly used for collection, achievements, and quests. Finding the rare fish can be challenging because they’re found in certain areas. In our fishing guide in Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred, we explore how to unlock fishing and the best location to fish.

How To Unlock Fishing

Fishing in Diablo IV is only available in the Lord of Hatred expansion. The new feature must be unlocked by completing the initial quest in the city of Temis. Fishing doesn’t appear at all if you don’t own this expansion. Continue progressing the expansion story until you reach Skovos. You don’t need the endgame because it happens early in the expansion. You get a quest (Fishing) after arriving, and the quest marker leads you to a fisherman NPC.

How To Unlock Fishing

Make your way to the marked location near the coast/Philios area. Approach the fishing expert (Shi Yugong) and interact with him. He gives you an objective to catch your first fish. Fishing is unlocked permanently after doing this, letting you gain the Cast Fishing Line Emote. Fishing is not a tool system in Diablo IV, as it works via the emote wheel. The Fishing emote automatically adds to your Action Wheel, or use the Customize option to add it. Go to the Controls tab in the Options menu to assign a key bind to it.

How To Fish in Diablo IV

You must stay close to a river, lake, coast, or dock to start fishing in Diablo IV. Move closer if the game tells you your position is invalid. Open the emote wheel and select Cast Fishing Line to automatically throw the line. You need to watch the water carefully and see a splash near the hook or a fish icon above your character. Hit the action button quickly as soon as you see the signal.

How To Fish in Diablo IV

The fish can escape if you’re too slow. Walk over the dropped fish on the ground and pick it up. Make sure to use the fish to add it to your collection from the Consumable tab in Diablo IV. You don’t need any fishing rod or bait, so timing is everything. This is not a complex mini-game; speed matters. You may get the hunk items or weird surprises along with the rare fish while fishing.

Consumable menu has all the fish that you catch in Diablo IV. They’re weightless, letting you carry as much as you want. The game has multiple types of fish with different rarities. You get a unique fish while fishing for the first time. The main purpose of fish is collection progress, as completing them gives achievements or Salty Angler.

Catch the Fish

There are 117 total fish to collect across regions, and some are tied to the quests like The One That Got Away. You can sell it to vendors for gold if you somehow catch the same fish again. Fish do not give crafting materials, buffs, or upgrades in Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred.

Where To Fish in Diablo IV

Fishing can be done on any body of water across Sanctuary and Skovos in Diablo IV. The first and easiest fishing spot is Shi Yugong’s Dock. This place is right next to the fishing NPC and perfect for learning mechanics. The Lava Pools in volcanic zones have high-tier fishing rewards like Unique items and Legendary items. Each rare fish is tied to a specific region, so you must fish there. Below are the reliable spots for the rare fish.

Where To Fish in Diablo IV

  • Dry Steppes: Beach west of Ked Bardu
  • Fractured Peaks: Bridge near Yelesna
  • Hawezar: Walkway near Backwater
  • Kehjistan: Docks near Gea Kul
  • Nahantu: Pier near Kurast Docks

I recommend fishing near the docks, bridges, piers, and shorelines. You must choose spots near waypoints for faster farming. Don’t stay in one spot too long, so prefer changing regions instead of changing spots to get a specific fish.

Tips & Tricks For Fish Farming

Below are the best tips & tricks for fishing in Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred.

Tips & Tricks For Fish Farming

  • Move to another spot if you start getting repeats.
  • Clear one region, move to the next, and track progress in the Challenge tab.
  • Fish in all water types like rivers, lakes, and coasts, but don’t ignore lava pools.
  • Watch for the splash or icon above the character to press the action button quickly because speed matters.
  • Complete Favor for a Favor & The One That Got Away for targeting rare fish.
  • Areas like Blood in the Water spawn enemies instead of fish, so be ready to fight.
  • Sell the duplicate fish for gold because they have no extra use.
  • Some rare fish take multiple attempts, so efficiency matters more than luck.

Hi, I’m Ali. I started gaming with Max Payne, and it set the tone for my interest in darker, more immersive experiences. I mostly play soulslikes, RPGs, and FPS titles that focus on tight mechanics and pacing.

I have a strong appreciation for game soundtracks and how they shape the overall experience. I’m also a long-time horror fan, across both games and films, with a preference for atmosphere-driven storytelling. This space reflects that passion, exploring games through both their mechanics and the atmosphere they create.
