Bungie is reportedly planning layoffs, Destiny 3 is not in active production

Yesterday, Bungie officially announced the end of Destiny 2’s development. It will receive its final update on June 9 and will remain playable for everyone. After the news was released, Jason Schreier of Bloomberg released a report about what’s coming next for the Sony-owned studio.

According to Jason, Bungie is planning a “significant number of layoffs” as Destiny 2 development finishes. There are no plans right now to enter production on a Destiny 3 either. The number of job cuts that are coming is unknown.

Bungie’s staff are preparing pitches and starting development of new projects, including in the Destiny universe, but none have been greenlit. There’s also no guarantee any of these new project ideas will move forward.

For now, Bungie is investing more into Marathon, although the sales have not met expectations since its release in March. Some of the Destiny team have moved to Marathon, Bloomberg reports.
