Bethesda is well known for their open-world games that simulate survival from the dangers within the worlds they create like in Elder Scrolls and Fallout. Bringing a more realistic factor like hunger and fatigue into their games is a big step to a more life-like game. Fallout: New Vegas (2010) was the first to introduce this feature when the game launched, bringing an extra level of difficulty to the games already diverse in dangers environment. And now, the same mode is being brought to Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim with a more in-depth fix for a more realistic experience.
Compared to Fallout: New Vegas, Skyrim’s Survival Mode share traits like hunger, fatigue, and health generation. But each having a twist that wasn’t in New Vegas. Hunger Affects your stamina and your ability to use most weapons. Eating is the way to keep you from hunger and achieve the Well Fed bonus. And cooked food compared to uncooked will take part greatly. Cooked fills your hunger bar more (dark area on stamina bar) and eating uncooked gives you the possibility of contracting food poison. Fatigue affects your magicka (dark area on magicka bar); resting is the best way to restore you back to normal. But to obtain the Well Rested bonus you must sleep indoors. Otherwise, sleeping outside will have you waking up drained. And for health regeneration, it is completely out of the picture. Food and potions are the only way to heal yourself.

Newly introduced features to the mode list of body temperature, fast travel, leveling up, disease, carry weight, and afflictions.

  • Body Temperature: Being cold is major to avoid, especially in Skyrim. Affecting your movement speed, ability to lock pick & pick pockets, and your overall health (dark area on health bar). until you reach maximum cold and dying from the harsh cold that consumes most of the map. Ways to stay warm is by eating hot soup, standing near a torch or fire, and moving to a warmer area. Swimming in ice-cold water will also penalize you with death if you stay in it for too long. But there are spells that can deflect the elements of the harsh waters.
  • Fast Travel: Instant fast travel has been removed. Traversing my foot or horseback is the primary way of getting to any destination. Other ways like by boat or carriage is still available, but there’s still a catch. You might reach your destination needing to eat, sleep and warm up.
  • Leveling Up: The standard level up system can only be performed after sleeping. Once you’ve slept, then you can spend your perk points.
  • Disease: New diseases have been added to more of the worlds creatures and the previous diseases have been buffed up for more dangerous affects. And if left untreated, can grow into a more intense version of it. Shrines also don’t cure disease for free, can only cured by giving a gold offering.
  • Carry Weight: Your ability to carry items have been reduced and can affect your stamina, making you fatigued more quickly. And adding weight to arrows and lock picks as well.
  • Afflictions: Left untreated to the worlds elements give you bigger chances of contracting afflictions like frost bite or weakness. But can wear off after time or might need to be cured like certain diseases.
