Electronic Arts have acquired Respawn Entertainment, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Titanfall franchise. The deal is worth $455 million, EA said in a press release. Respawn Entertainment was founded by Vince Zampella and Jason West. Both have worked and were the original creators of the Call of Duty franchise up until Modern Warfare 2 when Activision fired them. In 2014, we saw their first work under Respawn with Titanfall and then in 2016 the very underrated Titanfall 2 which didn’t meet EA’s expectations but “still sold very well,”
EA shortened the details of the purchase:
“Under the agreement, EA will pay $151 million in cash, and up to $164 million in long-term equity in the form of restricted stock units to employees, which will vest over four years. In addition, EA may be required to pay additional variable cash consideration that is contingent upon achievement of certain performance milestones, relating to the development of future titles, through the end of calendar 2022. The additional consideration is limited to a maximum of $140 million.”

Sources tell GameInformer that Respawn staff is divided upon this acquisition with many people unhappy being under a large publisher. Other sources tell that Zampella plans to stay with the studio. We will be developing this news by the hour.
