Cross-Play For Apex Legends Could Be Coming Soon

Recently players have been occupied from the sudden release of Respawn Entertainment’s battle royale Apex Legends as the title has already surpassed 2.5 Million players and 600,000 concurrent users in its first 24 hours. With the major head count already filling the game’s lobbies, it has been discovered in a recent interview with Eurogamer that cross-play might be on the horizon for the new battle royale.

Accurding to the discussion between the videogame outlet and Respawn Entertainment, cross-play is currently unavailable between Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, but the studio “plans to allow players to play with their friends on other platforms”, at some point in the future. Detail on when that might actually happen though was not discussed.

Expanding on cross-platform play, talks of cross-progression also emerged and Respawn has said that it’s unlikely the feature will be implemented if cross-play ever arrives.

“Due to the way systems were set up early on”, the concept of cross-progression is unable to be “reconciled after the fact.”

Revisiting the concept of the multiplayer-focused Titanfall back in 2014, the conception of cross-play was less of a focus compared to this state of the generation. The game despite being available on three platforms (Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC) never received the feature due to the lacking capabilities on the One’s predecessor. But with discussion of Respawn’s latest title receiving cross-play, the chances are more likely if it continues to ring in a consistent player base as it does presently.

With Fortnite and now Rocket League receiving full fledge cross-play, the chances of online titles with frequent users have better odds of receiving the feature if enough influence backs to title. And if cross-play does eventually arrive to Apex Legends, this could push for the game’s arrival on Nintendo Switch and even mobile as Respawn has “nothing [they] can currently talk about”: in other words implying that the idea hasn’t been completely discarded as of yet.

Apex Legends is out now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
