The current status of Swedish-based studio and publisher Starbreeze Studios has been in quite the rut. Closing in on about a year now as the company continues to see a decline in player base activity on their titles and an deeper dive from lost profits. According to the quarterly financial report from Starbreeze Studios, the potential future of the company’s presence in the coming year does not look to be good, as stated by the current CEO.
Just last year, former CEO Bo Andersson stepped down from his position leading the company as tensions continued to lay down on Starbreeze at the time. Following Mikael Nermark taking helm of the developer/publisher, more struggles were met with the company such as the indefinite delay of Overkill’s The Walking Dead for console and Skybound cutting support from Starbreeze ultimately.
That being one of the handful of instances that have hindered the company during the duration leading up to now. Others such as Starbreeze selling the publishing rights for System Shock 3 more recently.
Starbreeze Studios’ CEO sharing his input on the matter:
“My main task is to secure financing for the company’s future operations,” Nermark states in the report. “Once this financing has been secured, we will be able to look ahead and present a more detailed strategy for the future.”
Indulging more on the subject, Nermark explains that the Payday IP could potentially boost sales for the publisher if managing to resolve the current issue that stands on the studio. “We have a very strong asset in Payday, which is the foundation upon which we will build Starbreeze future.”
Looking as the current titles that stand for Starbreeze like The Walking Dead and Payday 2 fail to meet expectations, this could be the last year the studio stands. Despite this not looking very good for Starbreeze, this isn’t the last call for the company until official word announces their closure.
