
For fans of the original Dragon’s Lair which released in 1983, you are in for a treat. It was revealed this week that after a year-long negotiation with Netflix, an agreement has been made to bring the project to fruition. In the midst of this announcement for the upcoming live-adaptation film, actor Ryan Reynolds is in discussion of being involved with the film by starring and to produce the project as well.
To make things even better, one of the original creators of the early 80s cabinet hallmark Don Bluth is said to be a Producer. Gary Goldman that produced the initial game who later went on to work on All Dogs go to Heaven will return as a Producer as well as John Pomeroy who animated the characters for the 1983 game.
Additionally, Roy Lee who’s working on the approaching Minecraft film will be producing under Vertigo Entertainment alongside Underground Films’ Trevor Engelson (snowfall) will be given the same role. The script is said to be penned by the Hageman brothers who are most notably associated with The Lego Movie. The plot of the coming film is said to follow true to the epic tale of Dirk the Daring and Princess Daphne.
The Dragon’s Lair series is comprised of the notorious, same-named first game alongside the 1991 sequel, Time Warp. A third follow-up titled ‘The Curse of Mordread’ is said to be a compilation of snippets from the first two games with unadded segments that never made it into the full release of its predecessors. There are also a handful of plarformers which tailed the franchise, but did not capture the heat that the 1983 arcade title did.
Netflix continues to ring in more video game related properties to is entertainment streaming platform. Currently, there are plans to release another project on Netflix based on the standalone expansion, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon with Adi Shankar involved.
