Video game adaptations are becoming more of an expectation these days instead of a dream. With XBOX celebrating its 25th anniversary this year there are still announcements to come. Today, it was revealed by Entertainment Weekly that a live-action Sea of Thieves movie is in the works.
Marvel filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton (Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Shang-Chi) will be producing the movie through his company, Hisako Films. A director has yet to be attached for the film.
Other adaptations of XBOX games include Gears of War (Netflix) and the sequel to A Minecraft Movie. There have been successful ones already from XBOX-owned IP such as Fallout which has been critically acclaimed on Prime Video. A Fallout Shelter reality competition show is also actively filming.
Previously, we have seen the Halo TV Series from Paramount+ but was not renewed for a Season 3.
It will be interesting to see how a Sea of Thieves movie will work as there isn’t a main character. The player is the main character along with the people they meet in their journey. Obviously, this can be done as we have seen with other movies like Minecraft.
Would you watch a Sea of Thieves movie?
