While players continue to reminisce on what was Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic that arrived to systems back in 2003, there are hopes that a new game or even a reworking would be in order at the very least. Although it is virtually confirmed a new installment is not to arrive, Obsidian Entertainment’s Chris Avellone that wrote for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II issued a synapse for what could have been for the long-cancelled sequel previously.
But despite the unfortunate fate the third release faced, rumors emerged which indicate a remake of the series is underway. Originally, Cinelinx reports that the project is underway. At the time of the report, it was presumed that BioWare would be helming the project since working on the first game. But, in a later report from Bespin Bulletin it was disclosed a team unfamiliar with Electronic Arts is to be responsible for development.
More recently to add some clarity to the reporting, Bloomberg Tech’s Jason Schreier when speaking on MinnMax offered that porting developer Aspyr Games is to be the firm working on the complete reimaginging for the near two decade-old title.
Ben Hanson: The idea that Visceral [Games] was working on an open-world pirate game – I thought was really interesting.
Jason Schreier: Yeah, that was pre- that went like through a different- a few different forms and then eventually turned into Rag Tag the Star Wars project. But year, Star Wars Games at EA have been cursed.
BH: yeah for sure, which is nice that someone other than EA is making a KOTOR [Knights of the Old Republic] remake?
JS: That’s true. This is public at this point. I mean, I basically confirmed that- Aspire [Games], which is a company this is- that ported a bunch of code or game(s) is working [on the remake].
Not to mention the previous coverings from Schreier on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic back in February, this is only a reiteration on the game being pursued by Aspyr Games. He also went to verify his statement in Twitter when asked. Of course, this appears to be a byproduct of the recent founding of Lucasfilms Games which enables franchises from the firm to be licensed other teams aside from Electronic Arts.
Previously, it was teased that Lucasfilms was searching for new avenues on how to tackle Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Initially, it was suggested that the ambition would be to bring the series to outlets outside of video games. Buzzfeed later reported that a film based on the video games would be in production.
