In the vault of IPs at Capcom, many were not expecting the publisher to announce a proper return to Onimusha. At The Game Awards, Capcom unveiled Onimusha: Way of the Sword. With a release window aimed for 2026, players are certainly excited to learn what the new game is. Simultaneously, the same can also be said for Okami Sequel which was also announced that the same presentation this week.

You can watch the trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword in the video below:

“Fight through bloodbaths of intense swordplay action. Explore the historic Japanese capital of Edo-era Kyoto, twisted by malevolent clouds of Malice. With every stage cloaked in mystery, danger and intrigue. Battle against monstrosities from the underworld known as Genma in a tale of dark fantasy.

“Follow the tale of a samurai who wields the Oni Gauntlet, a mystical artifact that grants its bearer the power to slay Genma. Through gritty, blood-soaked brawls, he searches for his reason to fight. What fate awaits at the end of his path?” the overview from the official website reads.

Previously, Capcom has been keen to entertaining more for the Onimusha series. While not through the lens of a new game, it did have in some sense a successor. In that, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess was announced which released earlier this summer. But, that is not the only effort from Capcom that reignited excitement for Onimusha.

More directly, a proper anime was released on Netflix earlier in 2023. Established Japanese director Takashi Miike (Ace Attorney, Yakuza) was also attached as a supervisor director for the animated series of Onimusha. You can read the full report by heading here.
