While Nintendo continues to dominate the portable gaming sphere with Nintendo Switch now settled into the 90 million sold units projectile this past financial quarter, Valve is also entering the market with its own iteration of proprietary hardware as well. Previously announcing the Steam Deck, the new device delivers a PC experience in the palm of your hands for a premium price.

The handheld is to ship with two analog sticks and trackpads for cursor-sensitive software. Atop of that, there is also a separate dock which users can purchase to play their favorite titles from the Steam library right to the television. More notably is that certain tiers for the Steam Deck will feature expanded storage units which differentiate between eMMC & SSD hard drives.

But, the holiday 2021 release for the system is now being pushed to early 2022 according to Valve. A new blog post reveals that restrained access to required components is leaving the firm to delay the release until next year.

The launch of Steam Deck will be delayed by two months. We’re sorry about this—we did our best to work around the global supply chain issues, but due to material shortages, components aren’t reaching our manufacturing facilities in time for us to meet our initial launch dates.

Based on our updated build estimates, Steam Deck will start shipping to customers February 2022. This will be the new start date of the reservation queue—all reservation holders keep their place in line but dates will shift back accordingly. Reservation date estimates will be updated shortly after this announcement.

“Again, we’re sorry we won’t be able to make our original ship date. We’ll continue working to improve reservation dates based on the new timeline, and will keep folks updated as we go,” Valve concludes with a final apology statement.

While many go ahead to compare the Steam Deck to the Nintendo Switch, Valve interjects that its intent is not to overtake the market from the Japanese firm. Instead, Valve’s intentions is for an entirely different demographic, the firm explains. You can read the full report by heading here.

Are you fine waiting a couple more months for the Steam Deck?
