More than three years ago, word broke out on a new IP from Double Fine Productions. But rather than a niché story-focused project, the report pointed towards a new live-service, multiplayer experience dubbed ‘Kiln’. The game focused around online, competitive hijinx as you play as various types of pottery. By the time of this year’s Xbox Developer_Direct, it was officially revealed with a spring launch window slated.
Now this week, Double Fine Productions alongside Xbox Game Studios now confirmed that Kiln will officially launch next month. There will also be multiple playtests – closed & public – to be held from now until release. Recently, the studio did a map feature for Kiln which you can watch in the video below:
“First and foremost, people of all ages were delighted by the pottery wheel, particularly (though by no means exclusively) kids. Early on, a young woman exclaimed to her observing friend, ‘this is SO fun, as someone who actually does pottery!’ The pottery system allowed players to pour as much or as little care and attention into it as they want, and I’m excited to see what the wider public does with it,” Xbox Wire editor Will Dulton writes about Kiln.
“That balance of a low floor for entry and a high ceiling for mastery applies just as much to the brawling as it does to the creative side of Kiln’s loop,” Fulton added. “Everyone that I observed picked up the controls quickly and easily and had a great time just jumping in to mess around, but there are so many variables between the pottery and the maps that more dedicated players will have no shortage of things to learn and explore.”
Currently, server playtests are being held in a closed capacity by Double Fine Productions for Kiln. These exclusive betas are to run well into the release of the game. There will also be an open beta that will be held from April 9th to April 11th next month. For those interested, you can sign-up for the Steam beta by heading here.
