In the past year, competitive fighting game organizer Evolution Championship Series (EVO) has been through quite a lot. With the COVID-19 pandemic in full swing, and still is to some degree, the group decided to host an online event to ensure the safety of its participants and attendees then. However, the event was soon met with a bleak end as partners pulled from the show with stories of abuse from founder of EVO at the time.

It was in 2021 that the event took a turn for the better when PlayStation’s Sony Interactive Entertainment bought up the organization to establish a better platform for competitive esports for its users. Soon after did Sony Interactive Entertainment went to organize an online bracket for several games to take place throughout this past summer.

Now for 2022, EVO is to return to its home in Las Vegas, Nevada this coming August next year, a new announcement on Twitter reveals.

“We have loved the competition through our online events, but nothing beats live, in-person tournaments between players from around the world,” the post shares. “It has been too long since we have experienced the spirit of the FGC in person together.”

While EVO is now in the hands of PlayStation, Smash.gg is a subsidiary of Xbox company Microsoft. Previously, the firm announced to be fully acquiring the competitive online esports organizer. However, Microsoft has yet to illustrate how it will benefit its platform with the acquisition or improve upon what it was at purchase.

Recently, another in-person event is set to return. In that, Twitch announced TwitchCon is set to resurface later this summer and fall for TwitchCon Amsterdam & TwitchCon San Diego respectively. You can read the full report by heading here.
