Halo Studios, formerly known as 343 Industries announced they are shifting to Unreal Engine 5 for all future Halo games. The announcement came during the Halo World Championships before the Grand Finals. The studio didn’t announce a new game, but they did share concepts of Project Foundry where they created plenty of iconic assets from the Halo universe.
Halo Studios did confirm that they have multiple new games in development that are using Unreal Engine 5 but didn’t specify what they are working on. This change comes after Halo Infinite was using the Slipspace Engine.

“The way we made Halo games before doesn’t necessarily work as well for the way we want to make games for the future. So part of the conversation we had was about how we help the team focus on making games, versus making the tools and the engines.”
The Slipspace Engine has some old components that are almost 25 years old. “Although 343 were developing it continuously, there are aspects of Unreal that Epic has been developing for some time, which are unavailable to us in Slipspace – and would have taken huge amounts of time and resources to try and replicate,” said Studio Art Director Chris Matthews.
Project Foundry is not a new game nor is it a demo said Halo Studios. While the studio reiterates this is not a new game, a lot of the assets resemble Halo: Combat Evolved. It was rumored earlier this year that a Halo: Combat Evolved remake was in development that would see it released on PlayStation 5 as well.
It remains to be seen what is next for Halo, but the 25th Anniversary of the franchise is coming in 2026 and Microsoft already has plans for it.
