Update: 343’s founder Bonnie Ross went to Halo forums to comment about the recently leaked footage of Mega Bloks Halo game codenamed Project Haggar. Here’s the statement:
Over the past few days, footage has recently made the rounds of an exploratory Xbox 360 project we worked on several years ago, known as “Haggar.” Since then, we’ve received a lot of great feedback from the community. Haggar was something we prototyped with our friends at Mega Bloks that focused on the elements of action, exploration and user creativity found within the Halo universe. Haggar had a lot of fun ideas and invention behind it, but ultimately didn’t progress beyond the early prototyping levels that are shown in the recent video. This is just one example of several similar projects we have evaluated throughout the years – a process that we continue exploring on an ongoing basis. -b
Original Story: Back in 2013, Microsoft had a vision for a Mega Blocks Halo game for their Xbox console system. Apparently, the team at Seattle asked “a few different companies to submit prototypes as a way to win the bid to work on this project” – according to a user at /r/Halo.
He further emphasized that this prototype might not be the only version being submitted for a Mega Bloks theme game to Microsoft. Moving on to the video itself, Borman says the prototype, Codename “Haggar”, was being developed by nSpace a company known for porting successful games like CoD 4: Modern Warfare, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed to Nintendo DS among other works.
In this early but surprisingly well polished build from late 2013 shows players running around to fight Covenant, drive customizable vehicles, using bloks to build turrets and other environment pieces. The project was going to feature co-op mode and a siege mode. In certain areas, players could experience a 2.5D view platform action making the experience more engaging and familiar between the players. In this campaign mission, Borman says the average player could take 45 minutes or more to go through everything ending with a puzzle section.
Mega Bloks Halo was ostensibly canceled by Microsoft at the end of 2013 with the launch of Xbox One as a result of being developed for Xbox 360.
We are going to reach out 343 Industries to learn more about this project. Until then, stick with us at Rectify Gaming!
