Discover everything you need to know about the Lockbox keys in Marathon, including how to obtain them in a run.
Have you found the locked containers during the run, but can’t open them? You need a special key called a Lockbox key to open these Lockboxes scattered all around the map. Get your hands on these keys while searching inside the buildings, or use credits to purchase from the keymaker.
If you die before extracting, any Lockbox Key you are carrying is lost forever. Get ready for a run and start searching the Lockbox keys as much as you can.
What Are Lockbox Keys

Lockbox Keys in Marathon are the consumable keys that allow players to open Lockboxes scattered all around the map. The boxes yield credits, crafting materials, cores, consumables, and rare gear or weapons.
Lockboxes usually appear inside special loot rooms or buildings, so make sure to check them. Red flares or smoke on the roof indicate that there are lockbox caches inside. You find multiple locked containers inside these buildings. You can’t open them directly, as you need a key to open them.
How Lockbox Key Works

If you somehow manage to find the Lockbox key, but you die before extraction, then you lose it. Keys only stay in your inventory if you successfully extract from the match. You can choose to use the key to unlock the containers after grabbing it or extract immediately after finding it. These are consumable keys in the game, meaning they disappear after you use them.
You can bring a key by locating one in a previous run and extracting it. When you interact with a locked container, it opens and drops loot for you to grab. Lockbox rooms often contain multiple locked chests, so make sure to bring more keys if you want more loot.
How To Get Lockbox Keys in Marathon

You can pick up Lockbox Keys from the high-loot buildings and compounds during a run. They mostly spawn inside containers or lying on top of crates, benches, tables, and objects. Upper floors and office areas of large structures contain more Lockbox Keys in Marathon. I recommend checking every crate and room in dense loot zones.
The other best method to acquire this consumable is to purchase it from the keymaker. You need to first level up the CyberAcme faction to rank 5 to unlock the Keymaker perk. After that, you can buy Lockbox Keys in the Armory before deploying. Make sure you have enough credits in your account to spend them on Lockbox keys.
Lockbox Keys Location

The spawn location of these keys is not fixed, so you may have to check every building and corner to locate them. Major compounds with high loot density are prime spots for these keys, so check them. Look for the red building in South Array to find both the key and lockboxes.
I recommend checking the upper floors and office interiors, as the keys are more likely to spawn there. Lockbox caches are marked by red flares on roofs, and keys can most probably spawn nearby.
Unlocking the Keymaker perk early is one of the long-term investments to make Lockbox Keys a repeatable resource. Search the blue building at the center of Station, the east side large building on the east side of North Relay, and the abandoned area on the side of South Relay in Perimeter.
