It seems that Steam continues to lose its grip as an online storefront for the PC platform as Deep Silver announced today that the upcoming Metro Exodus will be available only on The Epic Games Store.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney made a statement regarding the recent news between Deep Silver and Epic:
We are partnering with Deep Silver to launch Metro Exodus, underpinned by Epic’s marketing support and commitment to offering an 88% revenue split, enabling game creators to further reinvest in building great games and improving the economics of game stores for everybody.
For users on Steam and other competing online retailers who have already pre-ordered the title will still receive the game coming mid-February. Similarly to what happened previously with The Division 2, this seems to not be the last time we will see titles homed on Steam become exclusive to the Epic Games Store.
On top of the game being discontinued on Steam, those who pre-order the game on Epic’s storefront will receive a deducted price of $$9.99 over Steam’s $59.99. In response to the sudden decision from Deep Silver, Steam made an statement on the situation:
Later today, sales of Metro Exodus will be discontinued on Steam due to a publisher decision to make the game exclusive to another PC store. The developer and publisher have assured us that all prior sales of the game on Steam will be fulfilled on Steam, and Steam owners will be able to access the game and any future updates or DLC through Steam. We think the decision to remove the game is unfair to Steam customers, especially after a long pre-sale period. We apologize to Steam customers that were expecting it to be available for sale through the February 15th release date, but we were only recently informed of the decision and given limited time to let everyone know.
This being the first time that Steam has acknowledged Epic Games and their recently established partnerships, it illustrates that the Valve-owned game marketplace is well aware of the doings from their competitor. For what or how Steam plans to counteract the fast-acting Epic Games Store is unknown currently, but something should be done soon as Epic is driving away numbers from the online retailer and upsetting long-termed Steam users.
Deep Silver has also revealed to release both Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light on the Epic Games Store in the following months.
Metro Exodus is set to release on February 15, 2019 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
