Although many of the beloved and highly-requested releases of Nintendo’s prior work is coming to Nintendo Switch, Metroid Prime Trilogy appears to be to one that never makes the cut despite the high number of demand for it. In the past, there has been hope for a potential reveal at numerous Nintendo-held shows alongside annual showcases that never once acknowledged the cry from its consumer base.

In early 2019, then-Game Informer Senior Editor Imran Khan did state that Metroid Prime Trilogy is nearing its completion if it did not conclude already. However, he continued by elaborating that Nintendo is effectively the only obstacle from releasing the game to the Nintendo eShop. But since, little has been brought to life on the matter. One listing appeared to receive a nod from the most recent Paper Mario release last summer, but, still nothing.

However, one former developer that worked at Retro Studios explains that if the team were to pursue the project, it would be a heavy task to meet mainly due to Metroid Prime 3, says Michael Wikan, lead designer for Metroid Prime 1 – 3.

That would take a lot of effort, so I am pretty skeptical it will happen. It was straightforward to update MP1 and 2 to motion controls, but converting MP3 to normal controls would be a herculean effort, as it is scripted very specifically using volumetric triggers to detect the motion in precise manners to do specific switches, and the bosses are tuned to take into account the ease of gestural aiming.

If not concerning enough from the statement from Wikan, it also disregards Metroid Prime Trilogy even being real altogether if it “would take a lot of effort” for even Retro Studios – the team that made the games. Wikan also adds that the developer is not in possession of the original code anymore either. “The biggest issue is Retro no longer has functional editor tools to work with Prime code base, so everything has to be ‘brute force’ hard coded.

He continues, “Rebuilding the hundreds of interactions set in MP3 alone, not to mention returning the game play to take in the slower engagement pacing of conventional controls would probably take a year with a 4-5- person team full time by itself.” Another noteworthy mention is that Retro Studios is currently working from the ground up on Metroid Prime 4 as of writing as well.

While hope might be very miniscule thanks to the recent reality check, there is still faith in a potential Metroid film some day. Metal Gear director Jordan Vogt-Roberts told IGN he would be interested in making a film adaptation. Later on, Brie Larson (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, Captain Marvel) shared her enthusiasm to play as Samus in a live-action production. You can read the full report by heading here.
