Looking at the videogame industry as a whole, we typically view it as sides divided between platforms and hardware when looking at the companies that make playing games even possible. But tech giants Sony and Microsoft show that competing sides can still work together despite their position towards resolving industry-related issues.
Announcing the new partnership through a press release with Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shaking on the new deal, both companies plan to work together in bettering consumer experience with cloud-based technology and AI solutions.
In technical terms, this new collaboration will take Sony’s semiconductors and with Microsoft’s Azure AI to enhance not only theirs, but services throughout the industry as well as improving interactive content as the cloud become more prevalent in gaming. Yoshida sharing his excitement on the new partnership:
“Our mission is to seamlessly evolve this platform as one that continues to deliver the best and most immersive entertainment experiences, together with a cloud environment that ensures the best possible experience, anytime, anywhere,” the Sony CEO stated in the press release. “For many years, Microsoft has been a key business partner for us, though of course the two companies have also been competing in some areas. I believe that our joint development of future cloud solutions will contribute greatly to the advancement of interactive content.”
Exciting as it is seeing the two major console titans put their differences aside, this doesn’t mean that we should expect a PlayStation/Xbox hybrid platform in the near future. Rather, this will bring some ease to troubling matters that the two wouldn’t be able to solve alone. As the two start this new relationship for the industry, we will slowly witness game changing feats thanks to looking at the bigger picture.
