Since the launch of the Xbox Series & PlayStation 5 consoles respectively in November 2020, the two platforms continue to outperform preceding hardware. Over on the Sony side of the landscape, the PlayStation 5 sets a new precedent for the industry becoming the fastest-selling system of all time in the United States. It even broke the 33-week ongoing record Nintendo Switch led back in September 2021.
However, Xbox Series is also exceeding expectations in comparison to previous hardware as well. According to one report earlier in the fall, Xbox Series X|S was close to breaking 100K sold units in Japan – a record that the Xbox One took more than 3 years to make. Additionally, the Xbox Series S in an abrupt surprise was reported to be the most-sold console on Black Friday back in November.
However, Nintendo Switch still dominated November overall sales as per a press release from Nintendo. This week in a statement from Xbox boss Phil Spencer speaking to The New York Times, Xbox Series consoles are selling faster than every console before it, The Verge’s Tom Warren transcribed on Twitter.
At this point, we’ve sold more of this generation of Xboxes, which is Xbox Series X / S, than we had any previous version of Xboxes.
Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox
Spencer’s statement echoes a previous announcement from Microsoft during the Xbox Series X|S launch in November 2020. Despite shortages and scarce pre-orders, Xbox Series launch shattered expectations for the Xbox firm and was projected to continue the momentum into the year following.
Even more, gamesindustry.biz head Chris Dring also entered in some eye-opening information regarding the latest Xbox generation. In a separate thread, he shares that Xbox Series X|S sold more in December than any other month prior. “Still going through the numbers for December in the UK, but as a bit of a tease… looks like December was the biggest month ever for Xbox Series S and X. Yes, including the launch month.”Â
Additionally, Nike Partners’ David Ahmad chimes in to elaborate Xbox Series sales close in on 12 million according to internal projections. The likelihood is due to the firm’s entry-level Xbox Series S despite the market setback in components. Already, Xbox Series S is reported to have outsold its beefier sibling in several key markets.
