It doesn’t take a lot of know-how to understand that Xbox is in a poor state compared to the competition. But, the firm recently found new leadership with Asha Sharma now spearheading the entire platform succeeding Phil Spencer. Upon her helming the green throne, Sharma has stated her ambitions to bring Xbox back to its roots as an outlier in the market alike it embraced back in the early 2000s.

Additionally, word has already begun to break out on the plans moving forward for the next-generation console. Last week, it was properly teased that the new console will be dubbed ‘Project Helix’ until given the proper titling. With GDC now taking place, other things are being retooled as well by Microsoft. One thing noticed already is that the firm has abandoned its ‘This Is An Xbox’ campaign which was championed by former leadership up until recently.

Now after Microsoft spoke during its keynote during the show in San Francisco, the Xbox company presses on some of its plans for the transition to the new SKU. Xbox vice president of next generation Jason Ronald revealed that the new ‘Xbox Mode’ for PC is prepared to start rolling out month which shares the abridged approach this new system will bring to consumes.

“We’re taking everything we’ve learned about building a leading gaming OS and bringing it directly into Windows for both players and developers. After debuting an early version with the ROG Xbox Ally handhelds, today I’m excited to share that we are bringing the same innovation to Windows 11 with Xbox mode that begins rolling out in April, starting with select markets. Xbox mode lets players seamlessly switch between productivity and play, with a familiar full screen and controller optimized Xbox experience while embracing the openness of Windows.”

Alongside the new mode for PC users, alpha developer kits for Project Helix are projected to ship early next year in 2027. Microsoft during GDC also shared some insight on its plans for developers via The Verge. From images displayed on the showfloor, it reveals that Microsoft’s intentions for game studios to aim for the PC development model which can be reconfigured for the new console.

This plays into part the next-gen Xbox is both PC & in-house powered. The concept of crossing PC with console has been an ongoing concept in conversations for a couple years now. When speaking to Mashable, former Xbox president Sarah Bond confirmed the new system is a hybrid console officially. You can read the full report by heading here.
