For Sonic the Hedgehog, the brand since its debut almost three decades ago continues to find new ways to integrate the iconic Sega mascot outside of video games. The most recent and successful attempts came from the same-named film that released earlier this February. The box office reception deemed the production is valid enough for a sequel now scheduled to arrive sometime in spring 2022.
However, Sega is still looking to pursue to find its footing in television for the character. While yes, there are a handful of namely shows, its latest, Sonic Boom, did the opposite effect for the brand. But now according to a new announcement from Netflix, a new project is underway. In a now-deleted post, the streaming platform announces to be working with Sega on a new series.
More importantly, a 3D animated series is coming. Scheduled for 2022, the platform is collaborating with Man of Action Entertainment (Ben 10, Marvel’s Ultimate Spiderman) and WildBrain (Peanuts, Teletubbies) to bring the production to Netflix.
Oddly enough, Netflix shortly after the tweet was made decided to retract the post. Perhaps Sega was not prepared to make the announcement so soon with plans for a 30th anniversary set for next year. The initiative offered to investors disclose that games, digital content, and events will be entertained sometime next year to celebrate the franchise turning 30.
This marks yet another endeavor involving Netflix and prominent video game franchises. Previously, the firm told to be working on series including Resident Evil, Beyond Good & Evil, and Splinter Cell. The most recent is with Ubisoft offering that a new live-action Assassin’s Creed series is in the works. You can read the full report by heading here.
